Flight Sergeant Strachan Brittain
Flight Commander No3 Flight
The longest serving cadet on the Squadron, Instructor Flight Sergeant Brittain joined us in June 2004 just after his 13th birthday. Due to his fathers command position on squadron he has had a huge and vested interest in the Air Training Corps from a very young age, this resulted in him setting about his cadet career as soon as he came of age.
After passing his First Class training FS Brittain immediately joined the band as the first notable male bell-lyre player in many years and then later as a very successful snare drummer. Having been selected as runner up in the South and West Yorkshire Wing and North Region competitions he hopes to go one better at RAF Halton in the Corps finals.
After his recent promotion his prime role on squadron changed and now see's him as Flight Commander to No3 Flight. He also shares the role of Band Quartermaster on the squadron, ensuring that all band equipment is stored and maintained correctly.
Having finished his B-TEC in Aviation Studies he is currently working towards two more B-TECs, one in Public Services and the other in Music whilst also in the process of completing his Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
A keen sportsman, FS Brittain has represented both South and West Yorkshire and Central & East Yorkshire Wings in various sports including swimming, football, and rugby. He has captained both Wing football teams at different levels whilst also being selected to represent North Region at the Senior Football.
More recently he has been appointed as the Cadet Liaison Officer for the six squadrons that have recently become part of Central and East Yorkshire Wing and coached the Wing Junior football team to victory and is hoping to do the same with the region team.
During his time with the squadron Flight Sergeant Brittain has received several local awards. He was awarded the Best Newcomer award in 2005 whilst also picking up the First Class Academic Award for the same year. He was also named Bandsman of the Year 2008.
Strachan is currently studying toward his A-Levels at Prince Henry's Grammar School, Otley. He hopes to gain an Aeronautical Engineering Degree and take a year out, to work abroad in order to develop his language skills, before joining the Royal Air Force as an Engineering Officer.
